LA RENTRÉE: A Parisian September Reset

A week of simple, seasonal meals + little rituals for returning to rhythm.
Not a diet. Nor a detox. Not resolutions.
A gentle reset for the season ahead.
September in France has a wonderful feeling of being a new beginning. After the dreamy, unstructured days of August, there is something satisfying about putting things back in their places. The wardrobe changes. A new notebook comes out. The morning routine takes shape again. Dinner moves a little earlier, and suddenly you find yourself thinking about the months ahead.
La rentrée isn’t quite autumn, either. It is a conversation between summer and autumn, and nowhere is that transition more beautiful than in the markets of Paris.
As summer gently gives way to autumn, the markets become a beautiful portrait of the season in transition. The last raspberries, zucchini and tomatoes linger beside the first grapes, figs and early squash—a delicious reminder that summer has not quite left, even as autumn begins to arrive. Soon there will be mushrooms, leeks, pears, apples, and the chestnuts we’ll roast when the days grow cooler.
It is a season of abundance, when the French countryside offers up the fruits of months of patience and tending, and the flavors of the whole country seem to converge in Paris for la rentrée.
A SECOND BEGINNING
But la rentrée is about more than returning to work or school. It is a quiet invitation to restore a little order, elegance, and intentionality to daily life.
Not drastic resolutions, or a post-summer diet. Just a return to the things that make everyday life feel good: waking with a little more intention, cooking with the seasons, sitting down for a proper meal, clearing your space, and making time for a good book in the evenings.
September is a lovely month to begin again—not by becoming someone new, but by returning to yourself, a new version of yourself.

And perhaps that is why food feels so central to la rentrée. The market changes, the table changes, and our cooking changes with it. The flavors of late summer mingle with the first tastes of autumn, creating meals that are fresh, generous, and wonderfully in-between.
This month, I’m embracing that delicious in-between with a week of simple, seasonal meals designed to bring a little rhythm back to the table—and a few small rituals to make the return to routine feel less like an obligation and more like a pleasure.
The Rentrée Table
A week of simple, seasonal French-inspired meals
September asks us to come back to the table. This week’s September meal plan celebrates that delicious moment between summer and autumn, when the market is still generous with tomatoes and zucchini but begins offering figs, grapes, fennel, and the first squash of the season.
Think simple meals, satisfying portions, good bread, plenty of vegetables, and generally just enough structure to make the week feel wonderfully grounded.
Make meals satisfying enough to carry you.
There is something lovely about returning to a little structure after the looseness of summer. Rather than grazing throughout the day, September invites us to make our meals feel complete: a little protein, plenty of vegetables, good bread or grains, and something delicious enough that we don’t feel deprived.
And if you’re genuinely hungry between meals? Eat. A piece of fruit, yogurt, a handful of nuts or a little cheese isn’t a failure of discipline. It’s simply food.
MONDAY
Back to Rhythm
☕ A Little September Ritual
Reclaim the morning.
Wake just a little earlier. Open the curtains. Have some lemon water and put the kettle or coffee on. Before reaching for your phone, take ten quiet minutes to decide how you’d like the day to feel.
Breakfast
Greek yogurt with figs, walnuts & honey
Lunch
Grated carrot salad with lemon-mustard vinaigrette, lentils & a slice of sourdough bread
Dinner
Leek & potato soup (or Vichyssoise) with a soft-boiled egg atop bitter greens
TUESDAY
Back to the Market
🧺 A Little September Ritual
Shop like a Parisian.
Don’t arrive at the market with every meal already decided. Choose one or two things simply because they look beautiful. A bunch of fennel. The last perfect tomatoes. A basket of plums. Let the season have a say in dinner.
Breakfast
Whole-grain tartine w/butter, a plum + coffee
Lunch
Tomato, white bean & tuna salad with fresh herbs
Dinner
Roast Chicken Parisian with zucchini (use chicken thighs to make it simple) or this beautiful Sheet-Pan Chicken with Figs from Food52
WEDNESDAY
A Little Order
🧺 A Little September Ritual
Reset the kitchen.
Clear out the refrigerator. Wash the greens. Put the fruit somewhere you’ll see it. Make a little space for the new season.
There is something surprisingly luxurious about opening a clean refrigerator and knowing exactly what you’re going to cook.
Breakfast
Greek yogurt with figs & pumpkin seeds
Lunch
French lentil salad with roasted vegetables & chèvre
Dinner
Salmon with fennel, roasted potatoes & lemon
THURSDAY
Return to the Table
🕯️ A Little September Ritual
Set the table again.
Summer meals can be wonderfully casual—eaten outside, standing at the counter, perhaps much later than usual. September invites us back to the table.
Light a candle. Put out the cloth napkins, then pour something lovely into a proper glass. Dinner doesn’t need to be elaborate to feel special.
Breakfast
Tartine + café au lait
Lunch
Omelette aux fines herbes, green salad & a side of frites
Dinner
Risotto and Sautéed Mushrooms, drizzled with a beautiful White Truffle Oil (I just ordered from Flamingo Estate 💗)
FRIDAY
La Petite Joie
🎶 A Little September Ritual
Curate the mood.
Put on your September playlist. Buy flowers on the way home. Open the windows while you cook. Pour yourself something delicious.
A routine becomes a ritual when we give it a little beauty.
Breakfast
Greek yogurt with berries & pistachios
Lunch
Niçoise-inspired salad à la Goop
Dinner
Fig & goat cheese tartine or a seasonal pizza
Something sweet
A few squares of dark chocolate with a pear
🍂 THE WEEKEND
Don’t Rush the Reset
The weekend is where you let the rhythm become your own.
Visit the market. Make soup. Roast a chicken. Invite someone for lunch. Eat outside if the weather is kind. Use up the vegetables waiting in the refrigerator.
La rentrée isn’t about following a perfect routine. It’s about creating a rhythm that makes everyday life feel a little more intentional.
A Rentrée Ritual
On the first weekend of September, visit the market without rushing. Bring home figs, a bunch of flowers, a loaf of good bread and whatever vegetables look beautiful that morning. Clear the kitchen table, put away the last traces of summer, and make a simple lunch.
Don’t make resolutions. Instead, choose three small things you’d like more of this autumn: more dinners at the table, more walks after lunch, more mornings without your phone.
Then eat your lunch slowly.
La rentrée isn’t about becoming someone new. It’s about returning to yourself.
Happy September

À bientôt !
