5 fun & healthy Labor Day recipes for a fabulous Friday
Salut, happy Friday and hopefully for you, happy long holiday week-end! This foodie Friday I’m talking about recipes I’m going to try over the weekend. Since I just did a mini detox, I want to keep it fairly healthy. Of course it is a holiday weekend, so we need to celebrate a little! Here are 5 fun & healthy Labor Day recipes for a fabulous Friday!
brunch
We have made it a tradition every Labor Day (and every Memorial Day) to make our breakfast/brunch on the grill. Husband is the grill master! It’s a mixture of potatoes, sausages, peppers and topped with eggs. It’s beautiful, fun and delicious.You really don’t need a recipe for this one, one tip is to parboil the potatoes first, so you can grill everything together and the veggies don’t get done first. When all of that is done, crack some eggs on top to finish! Usually we have Bloody Mary’s along with but I’m thinking about a little twist this year, still with a little spice, but we can call it semi- healthy? Introducing the Carrot Orange Cocktail!
Cocktail Carotte Orange
Ingredients
- 2 slices jalapeno
- 2 carrot top leaves
- 1 slice ginger
- ½ cup carrot juice
- ½ cup fresh orange juice
- 2 tbsp lime juice
- 2 oz vodka
- 1 oz Cointreau or Grand Marnier
- ice
- orange peel swirl, carrot top or celery for garnish
Instructions
- Muddle carrot top leaves, jalapeno and ginger in a cocktail shaker. Add carrot juice, orange juice, lime juice, vodka, Cointreau, and ice to cocktail shaker; shake well. Pour mixture through strainer into 2 ice-filled glasses. Garnish with orange peel, carrot top or celery.

After the big grilled brunch – and cocktails! – we usually don’t need lunch. A little snack might be good though. Maybe some fresh cherry tomatoes from the garden skewered with little mozzarella balls and some fresh basil leaves? Even better with a little of my favorite pesto on the side 😋 For dinner its back to the grill! I love a good turkey burger and Goop’s version is the jam of course. Healthy too! Instead of a bun, it’s lettuce wrapped. I’ve tried the Lettuce-Wrapped Turkey Burger with Basil Guac and I think it is perfect for the holiday.
If you really want something on a bun, I think I might too, it would be a great excuse to try these SMOKY VEGAN CARROT DOGS. They look so good! Topped with some jalapenos, red cabbage slaw and mustard? Oui! For a side, some healthy chips would be enough, especially if you are having the burger and the dog. Of course you need some Rosé, being the last real weekend of the summer.

While I’m on a carrot roll, this Soufflé aux Carottes (Carrot Soufflé) looks wonderful! But since I’m going back to work Tuesday, I think it might be a little heavy to end my weekend with, so how about some cookies? I’ve been craving butterscotch lately and I thought combining it with the rye flour I have would be brilliant! MMMmmm… I can’t wait!
Butterscotch Rye Cookies
Ingredients
- 1 cup medium rye flour
- ½ cup all purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ cup coconut oil, melted
- 2 tbsp oat milk
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup coconut sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup butterscotch chips
- pink sea salt, crushed
Instructions
- Whisk together the rye flour, all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda. In a mixer beat coconut oil, oat milk and sugars together on medium speed about 3 minutes, until blended. Add the egg, and beat a few minutes more. Turn off the mixer, add the dry ingredients. Begin to blend on lowest speed (so flour doesn't fly everywhere), then mix on low speed until the flour is incorporated. Add the butterscotch chips. Mix until just mixed in. Scrape the bowl to bring dough together.Line baking sheet with parchment. Scoop large tbsp. of dough and roll into a ball, place on baking sheet. Continue with the rest of the dough. Cover, and refrigerate overnight. Preheat oven to 425. Line another baking sheet with parchment paper and arrange the cookies on the sheet, 2 inches between each cookie about 7 will fit on a sheet, keep the rest in the fridge until 1st batch is done, or freeze for later). Sprinkle a little salt on each cookie. Bake cookies for 10 minutes, remove from oven and let rest on the sheet for 3 minutes, then transfer them to a rack. Repeat with the remaining dough. Let cool about 10 minutes, or wait until they reach room temperature.

Tonight, since I need to whip up some pesto for the tomatoes anyway, I think I will try to replicate my favorite pizza from Rubirosa in NYC!
